Frequently Asked Questions about Facial Plastic Surgery
Posted by admin on March 23, 2011
Q.) What are the advantages of traditional face lift procedures when there are so many options for “mini” facelift procedures?
A.) More and more patients are opting for “mini” facelifts when they first start seeing the early signs of aging (i.e.- crow’s feet, smile lines, slight forehead and brow sagging, etc.). Patients with moderate signs of aging are also turning to partial face lifts to target the areas that need rejuvenation. While these minimally invasive procedures are great for some patients, the traditional facelift is still the most effective procedure for patients with more extensive “problem areas”.
Q.) I’m just starting to notice the signs of aging, but I don’t think I need a mini facelift yet. What are my other options?
A.) There are many answers to this question, and the correct response really depends on your preferences and needs. Cosmetic injectables (Botox® and Dysport®) and facial fillers (Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Perlane®) are great options for patients who have wrinkles, deep furrows, and areas of lost volume that are looking for noticeable, yet not dramatic rejuvenation results. If your wrinkles are minimal, chemical peels and laser resurfacing techniques may eliminate your cosmetic concerns.
Q.) Do you have to be a certain age to have rhinoplasty?
A.) Dr. Burstein performs nose surgery on patients of every age depending on their surgical needs. Because the nose is an ever-changing facial feature, it is best to reserve cosmetic nose surgery for patients who have already completed puberty (unless the cosmetic concern is the result of a congenital defect in which immediate attention is appropriate). As with any facial plastic surgery, thoughtful contemplation and adequate research must be completed before any procedure is pursued.
Q.) I want to do something about my aging eyes, but I am just not sure where to start or what procedure will best suit my needs. The research I’ve done on facial plastic surgery seems to indicate I either need upper eyelid surgery or a brow lift. How do I know what procedure is right for me?
A.) The best thing to do is to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon that can assess your needs and discuss all of the treatment options available. I see patients regularly for aging eyes. Typically, blepharoplasty/eyelid surgery and/or a brow lift can successfully get rid of that perpetually tired look.
Q.) What is involved in a rhinoplasty consultation?
A.) When planning to perform rhinoplasty, Dr. Burstein first consults with his patient to establish their esthetic and/or functional goals and concerns. During this time he obtains a thorough medical history, as well as family medical history, to determine necessary surgical precautions. Next, photos are taken, and if appropriate, computer imaging is performed to demonstrate a computer generated result that shows the patient what they can expect to ensure both surgeon and patient are on the same page.
