Breast Reconstruction is a surgical procedure to create a breast that has been removed due to cancer or other disease. The reconstructed breast can mirror the form and appearance of a natural breast.

Candidates include women who have had a mastectomy or who will be having a mastectomy. A breast reconstruction which is performed at the time of mastectomy is called immediate breast reconstruction. This may also be performed months or years after mastectomy.

There are different procedures, but mainly two classes. One technique combines skin expansion and the subsequent insertion of an implant. The other uses living tissue taken from other parts of the body, such as the abdomen, back, hips, thighs and buttocks.

TThe surgeons at APS pioneered the use of natural tissue from the abdomen to rebuild the breast. Our founder, Dr. Carl Hartrampf, Jr., is the surgeon who developed the TRAM flap operation, now the preferred technique for natural tissue breast reconstruction around the world. And every year, APS surgeons give a symposium for Plastic Surgeons across the globe, during which the latest innovations in reconstruction and cosmetic breast procedures are presented.
