Although he retired from our Atlanta Plastic Surgery practice in 2018, Dr. Fernando Burstein has been recognized as one of the world’s leading plastic and reconstructive surgeons for more than thirty years. Board certified in both Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology (head and neck surgery), he devoted his career to perfecting his surgical techniques and to becoming an expert in the natural contours of the face. A gifted instructor and the author of more than one hundred published articles and book chapters, Dr. Burstein earned a reputation for both his outstanding surgical skills and his passion for his patient’s complete medical well-being. He has been recognized by Castle Connolly’s as one of the nation’s “Top Doctors” in the field of plastic surgery for the last nine consecutive years and thirteen times since 1999.
Dr. Burstein trained in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Yale. He completed an advanced fellowship in Craniofacial Surgery at UCLA before joining the team at Atlanta Plastic Surgery P.C. in 1989. He has served as Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, was the director of the Center for Craniofacial Disorders at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and held an academic appointment at Emory University as a clinical professor. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as president of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2006. Dr. Burstein has earned membership in the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Now that he has retired from private practice, Dr. Burstein and his wife, Dr. Kathleen Johnson, enjoy spending time with their two children, traveling, and engaging in outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain climbing, and cycling.
