According to recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), liposuction and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) rank among the top five most performed surgical procedures. Often referred to as lipoabdominoplasty, liposuction and tummy tuck can be combined in mommy makeover surgery or for complete rejuvenation for the midsection. I perform these body contouring procedures individually to target specific areas of concern or in combination for overall rejuvenation for my patients.
In a study published in ASPS’ medical journal, a combined procedure of liposuction followed by tummy tuck showed a low complication rate and high patient satisfaction. Researchers in the study performed liposuction first, followed by tummy tuck. Final study reports show that combination liposuction and tummy tuck reduces complication risk without the need of additional incisions, extra medication, or extended downtime.
To address areas of unwanted fat, liposuction removes fat cells through a cannula, or tiny tube, inserted through very small incisions. Liposuction addresses fat which lies directly beneath the skin and above the muscle. For this reason, liposuction does not address excess skin that can sometimes be caused by childbearing, excessive weight loss, or simply aging. Tummy tuck surgery specifically removes excess skin and fat while tightening weakened rectus (abdominal) muscles. During abdominoplasty, I remove unwanted fat and excess skin through an incision made between the hips where scarring is easily covered. Abdominal muscles are then repaired and tightened for a flatter appearance. For mommy makeover surgery, patients commonly combine liposuction and tummy tuck as pregnancies mainly affect the midsection.
