Am I a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

Recent advances in the field of plastic surgery allow patients to achieve aesthetic results previously thought to be “too good to be true.” For instance, combination procedures like the mommy makeover can help women rejuvenate their figure in a way that simply would not be possible with one traditional cosmetic surgery. A mommy makeover can describe any combination of a tummy tuck, liposuction, and/or a cosmetic breast surgery of the patient’s choice. The procedure is intended to help undo the unwanted changes that a woman’s body experiences as a result of pregnancy, childbirth, weight fluctuation, or natural aging. However, combining surgeries may not be the right approach for everyone. To help explain the mommy makeover and how it can help patients, I have outlined the different areas of a woman’s body that the procedure can help address.

Pregnancy and weight gain can cause the abdominal skin to become stretched and the appearance of a “pooch” to form. Over time, this excess, stretched skin can begin to hang over the pelvis. Additionally, pregnancy or weight gain can force a separation of the abdominal muscles called a diastasis rectus. Neither this stretching of the abdominal skin or the separation of the abdominal muscles can be treated with exercise alone. A mommy makeover utilizes tummy tuck surgery to treat these concerns and provide a flatter, more-toned abdomen. During a tummy tuck, I am able to correct the pooch by surgically tightening the abdominal muscles and removing excess skin and fat from the midsection. The abdominal muscle bands are tightened, and the remaining skin is repositioned to create a flatter abdomen and stronger, sturdier abdominal wall.

The Breasts

The breasts are another area that are commonly affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding. When a woman is pregnant, the glandular component of her breasts will naturally enlarge to prepare for the enhanced production of milk. Weight gain and hormone changes can also increase the breast size. This increase in breast size can lead to breast sagging due to the breast skin becoming stretched. Breast lift surgery can help by removing excess skin from the breasts and repositioning the tissue to create a perkier, younger-looking breast contour. For women more concerned about the size of their breasts than the positioning, a mommy makeover can also include breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery.

Areas of Excess Fat

Lastly, a mommy makeover can include liposuction to help remove stubborn, diet-resistant fat from areas on the body where it accumulates. Although liposuction is typically applied to areas like the back, arms, thighs, or flanks, it can safely be performed almost anywhere on the body where there are pockets of excess fat.

I have been performing mommy makeover procedures for years and have witnessed the incredible impact it can have on a patient’s appearance and wellbeing. When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon with experience combining these procedures, a mommy makeover can be a life-changing experience for many women.
