More than two thirds of the adults in this country are considered overweight or obese. Of these, over 23 million have a body mass index over 35 (considered severely obese). Many of my patients who have lost significant amounts of weight, whether from rigorous diet and exercise, post-pregnancy, or bariatric surgery, come to consult with me on specific issues that can only be addressed with surgery. I perform cosmetic body contouring procedures to provide my patients with a svelte physique to match their newfound, post-weight loss confidence. I work with each of my patients to tailor the best procedures needed to achieve the most natural plastic surgery results possible.
Even after my patients lose significant amounts of weight, they tend to have physical reminders of the weight they lost: skin and muscle remain stretched and distorted out of their original shape, often hanging in loose flaps from the abdomen and arms. This is where post weight loss surgery, or cosmetic post-bariatric body contouring procedures can come into play, eliminating excess skin and tightening what remains to reveal a smoother and more aesthetically pleasing silhouette.
The body lift (post-bariatric surgery) can involve a number of related cosmetic plastic surgery procedures including: tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), arm lift (brachioplasty), and possibly a breast lift and/or breast reduction. Performing these procedures together is ideal, as it requires less exposure to anesthesia than undergoing multiple procedures and cuts down on the need for multiple recovery periods.
Of these procedures, the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can be particularly important. Long term weight gain or pregnancy can cause a condition known as diastasis rectus, where the recti muscles found in the outermost abdominal wall, separate and spread. Once this happens, no amount of dieting or exercise will ever alleviate the resulting bulge in the midsection. The abdominoplasty I perform can retighten the abdominal muscles while removing excess skin and fat, helping to repair diastasis rectus.
Arm lifts help eliminate the excess skin and fat that sags underneath the arm, creating a more toned and contoured look and getting rid of the drooping skin commonly referred to as “bat wings.” Finally, some of my female patients also opt to reshape their breasts with a breast reduction or a breast lift procedure to create a more contoured and proportionate silhouette.
