These days, cosmetic surgery patients have more surgical options than ever. This is a great thing for patients, however, it can make the pre-surgery planning phase overwhelming for some. I commonly speak with female patients who want to rejuvenate the appearance of their breasts with plastic surgery but are not sure which breast procedure is the best fit for their needs. In many cases, a woman will have a general idea of the aesthetic results they would like to achieve, but don’t know the best procedure that will be able to help them. That’s why I’ve taken some time to detail the most common cosmetic breasts surgeries and how they can help women refresh the appearance of their breasts.
Breast augmentation surgery is the most commonly-performed cosmetic surgery for the breasts. The procedure is meant to help women who wish to increase the size and volume of their breasts. Breast augmentation can benefit women who are not satisfied with the size of their natural breasts, or those whose breast size has decreased due to weight fluctuation, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. During breast augmentation consultations, I discuss in detail all the patient’s options including the size, shape, and material of the breast implant they would like to use during their procedure.
While increasing breast size is a very common preference among women seeking cosmetic breast surgery, there are also many women who would prefer to have smaller, more modest breasts. For these women, breast reduction surgery can be a terrific option. During breast reduction surgery, I am able to safely remove excess tissue from the breasts and reposition the nipple to a more appropriate placement. Breast reduction can help patients who experience back and neck pain as a result of larger, heavier breasts or women who wish for a more proportional figure.
The effects of natural aging, gravity, weight fluctuation, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can take a toll on the breasts over time and lead to breast sagging. Thankfully, breast lift surgery can help. During a breast lift, stretched, excess skin is removed, and the breast is repositioned to a higher position on the chest. The result is firmer, perkier, younger-looking breasts. Although a breast lift cannot help a patient increase or decrease the size of the breasts, it’s common to combine breast lift surgery with either breast augmentation or breast reduction to achieve more comprehensive breast recontouring.
If you think you might be a good candidate for any of the above breast procedures, the first step is coming in for a plastic surgery consultation. During breast surgery consultations, I use Vectra® Digital Imaging Technology to provide my patients with a projection of what their final results may look like based on their body and their surgical preferences.
