After receiving FDA approval last year, “gummy bear” breast implants have gained more exposure both in the media and at my Atlanta practice. The breast implants are actually form stable breast implants comprised of highly cohesive silicone gel. These implants earned their nickname due to the thick, stable consistency of the silicone gel inside, so the implant maintains its shape even through a rupture. At Atlanta Plastic Surgery, P.C., I offer these anatomical implants as another breast implant option in addition to saline and conventional silicone. All three types of implants are safe and FDA approved for use in breast augmentation and breast reconstruction.
While saline and silicone implants are available in both round and shaped options, gummy bear implants are typically only available in the U.S. as teardrop shaped. Round implants, both saline and silicone, are common for breast augmentation as they provide the most noticeable lift and volume while teardrop implants are narrow at the top with a rounded base. The textured surface of the gummy bear implant prevents the implant from shifting within the patient’s breast cavity and provides a more integrated, natural feel.
Patients can preview simulated results with the anatomical implants and other implant options with Vectra® M3 digital imaging. Vectra® M3 captures images of each angle with implants of various types, sizes, and shapes to allow patients to compare and discuss each implant they’re considering. There are risks and benefits of each type, size, shape, and texture of breast implant so it’s important to consult with your board certified plastic surgeon about the best option for their lifestyle and aesthetic goals.
