Multiple plastic surgery associations including the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) recently released their industry reports for 2017. These reports are fascinating and paint a clear picture on the state of cosmetic surgery in the US. However, instead of discussing the study as a whole, I was particularly interested to find out which plastic surgery procedures were the most commonly-performed last year. I am always curious to find out how my personal experience as a board-certified plastic surgeon aligns with the world of cosmetic surgery. So, with that in mind, here is what you need to know about the three most popular plastic surgery procedures of 2017.
For the first time in a long time, breast augmentation was the most commonly-performed cosmetic surgery last year. 333,392 breast augmentation procedures were performed, accounting for over 23% of all plastic surgery performed on women in the US in 2017. Breast augmentation has always been very popular, as the size, shape, and feel of a woman’s breasts are a very common concern, but these stats indicate the procedure has become more in-demand with time.
Liposuction was the second most popular cosmetic surgery. A combined 304,850 women and men opted for liposuction last year to help reduce their unwanted, excess fat. Although it was no longer the most popular procedure performed, the number of liposuction procedures in 2017 did increase by an impressive 16.5% from the previous year. A large reason for the sustained popularity of liposuction is the procedure’s versatility, as it can be performed on areas all over the body including the abdomen, chest, back, arms, legs, neck, and more.
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) was the third most common plastic surgery in 2017. 145,390 eyelid surgery procedures were performed on men and women in the US last year. And while there is a large gap between that number and second place, it’s worth noting that eyelid surgery was the fastest growing procedure in 2017, increasing by over 26% from the previous year. Eyelid surgery is perfect for anyone who wishes to rejuvenate the appearance of their eyes and achieve a more youthful, refreshed facial appearance.
I hope you found these statistics as interesting as I did.
