The Benefits of Arm Lift Surgery

Typically, many individuals tend to accumulate excess skin on the upper arms due to the effects of aging, genetics, or if they’ve lost significant amounts of weight. Regardless of the amount of exercise or healthy eating habits that are practiced, patients often find that the skin does not respond and becomes loose and flabby. In order to address such concerns, I perform arm lift surgery, also known as brachioplasty, which helps eliminate excess skin and fat underneath the arm. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 5,599 upper arm lift procedures following substantial weight loss were performed in 2013.

The Benefits of Arm Lift SurgeryThe ideal candidate for brachioplasty is an individual with considerable upper arm skin laxity, who maintains a healthy lifestyle, and has no existing medical conditions that may impair healing or increase risk of surgery. During surgery, an incision is made along the inner or back of the arm, any excess fat is targeted with liposuction, and sagging skin is removed. Additionally, any underlying supportive tissue may also be reshaped and tightened to contour the arm to provide aesthetically-pleasing results.

Recovery from arm lift surgery usually takes up to a few weeks. Depending on your situation, you may need to wear compression garments to minimize swelling and keep your arms elevated for a few days after surgery. I will also provide you specific instructions on how to care for the surgical site, medications to promote healing, and when to schedule your follow up appointments. While an arm lift and other body contouring procedures can help you achieve personal cosmetic surgery goals, it’s important to remember it should not be a substitute for leading a healthy lifestyle. By maintaining a proper diet and exercise regimen, you can reduce recovery time and enhance your arm lift surgery results.
