With the FDA’s approval this year, Allergan’s Natrelle® style 410 breast implants have gained more exposure both in the media and at Atlanta Plastic Surgery. The highly cohesive silicone gel breast implants, often referred to as “gummy bear implants,” are another breast implant option in addition to saline and conventional silicone. All three types of implants are safe and FDA approved for use in breast augmentation and breast reconstruction.
As a member of Allergan’s Breast Aesthetics Executive Council, board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. James Namnoum takes special care to educate his patients on all of their implant options. For the past 8 years, Dr. Namnoum has been an important investigator for Allergan’s 410 silicone gel implants and has studied them in more than 200 patient cases.
Saline and silicone breast implants have elastomer shells filled with either sterile saline or silicone gel. The fill material and the implant’s surface texture will impact the feel of the device. For many women, shaped silicone implants like Allergan’s 410 implants produce firmer breasts, initially. However, even silicone implants become hydrated by other fluids in the body once they’re placed so the implants will soften to a degree over time.
While saline and silicone implants are available in both round and shaped options, Allergan 410 implants are only available in the U.S. as shaped. Round implants, both saline and conventional silicone implants, are common for breast augmentation as they provide the most noticeable lift and volume. Teardrop or shaped implants are narrow at the top with a rounded base. This can be especially advantageous to women with pre-existing conditions like tuberous breasts in which certain regions of the breasts need additional volume. The textured surface of the 410 implant also prevents migration of the implant within the breast cavity and provides a “one breast feel” so that the implant and the natural breast tissue feel more integrated as one.
There are risks and benefits of each type, size, shape, and texture of breast implant. It’s important to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon with extensive breast surgery experience using shaped implants as there are device attributes that may or may not be advantageous, depending on your cosmetic needs. Dr. Namnoum discusses each option with his breast augmentation and breast reconstruction patients to determine the best option for their lifestyle and aesthetic goals.
