Pregnancy and childbirth can be enriching, life changing experiences, but many women find themselves unhappy with the effect these experiences have on their bodies. After giving birth, it can be a tremendous struggle to restore the body to the appearance it once had. While making an extra effort to eat right and exercise after your baby is born can go a long way towards shedding any excess pregnancy pounds, some of these changes can be far more persistent. In these cases, plastic surgery procedures like a mommy makeover may be necessary in order to restore the body to its previous shape.
One of the most popular trends in plastic surgery today, the mommy makeover is actually a combination of cosmetic procedures designed to restore a woman’s pre-pregnancy appearance. By undergoing these body contouring surgeries simultaneously, patients do not have to undergo multiple recovery periods, allowing them to spend less time recuperating and more time enjoying their mommy makeover results. Every woman’s body is different, and so every mommy makeover needs to be customized to suit each individual woman’s needs. However, in most cases a mommy makeover involves three key elements.
One of the primary changes during pregnancy is, of course, the swelling of the uterus to accommodate the growing baby within. This rapid change in the size and shape of the abdomen can stretch not only the skin but the abdominal muscles themselves, causing a pronounced “pooch” that exercise and diet can never seem to reduce. Although in many cases, the skin and muscle will slowly shrink back to their normal size after a woman has given birth, some women find that childbirth leaves this entire area slack and sagging. An abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, can re-tighten the abdominal muscles, removing the “pooch” along with excess sagging skin, in order to restore a trim, flat, and toned look to the midsection.
Many women find that the increase in breast size that they experience during pregnancy and breast feeding has a permanent effect on the size and shape of their breasts. In some, the breasts can lose volume while the skin remains stretched, causing them to droop and appear deflated. In others, the breasts may either remain uncomfortably large or shrink more than the patient would like. Most mommy makeover procedures include some form of breast surgery to help restore the breasts to their pre-pregnancy appearance. In most cases this is a breast lift, designed to tighten the underlying supporting tissues and remove excess fat and skin, but many women also opt to include a breast reduction or breast augmentation as a part of the procedure to help them achieve the look they’ve always wanted.
During pregnancy, the body naturally stores more fat than it otherwise would in order to make sure that it has sufficient energy reserves stockpiled to last through childbirth and breast feeding. Often this excess fat is stored in areas of the body that are difficult to exercise, making them almost impossible to get rid of after the pregnancy is done. Liposuction can be a great way to remove these isolated fat deposits, and give the entire body a sleeker, more contoured appearance.
