Plastic Surgery Trend Predictions for 2011
The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) recently released a list of predictions for plastic surgery trends in 2011. Included on the list were predictions for an increased number of post bariatric surgery procedures such as body contouring and liposuction. While “trend” isn’t a word the surgeons of Atlanta Plastic Surgery necessarily like associating with the physical implications involved with surgery, examining such lists provides interesting insight into the complex psychological process that goes into making the decision for elective procedure(s).
ASAPS has noted that more people are becoming aware of the metabolic and physical problems associated with obesity, and are inspired to lose weight. Sometimes cosmetic surgery is needed after massive weight loss to reduce the areas that didn’t shrink with fat loss. ASAPS also predicts that researchers will continue to experiment with new liposuction methods such as laser liposuction, and methods that freeze/zap fat. While nothing but time will prove these predictions, continual research and development of minimally invasive plastic surgery techniques ensure this is a field that is only going to grow from here.
More and more Americans are seeking body contouring procedures after weight loss surgery to rid themselves of excess, hanging skin and fat deposits that remain after significant weight loss. In addition to liposuction, many post bariatric surgery patients are opting for breast reduction, breast lift (mastopexy), tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), arm lift (brachioplasty), and thigh lift procedures. Because the effects of weight loss (and gain) are physically different with every patient, any post weight loss cosmetic surgery is planned most effectively after a consultation at Atlanta Plastic Surgery.
Although ASAPS did not include predictions about mommy makeover procedures, Atlanta Plastic Surgery has noticed a rise in demand for such procedures, and predicts the number of mommy makeovers will also rise in 2011. Many components of mommy makeover surgery are similar to weight loss procedures in that they refine areas stretched or loosened by weight (or baby) gain. Mommy makeover procedures may include a combination of liposuction, tummy tuck, breast lift, breast augmentation, or breast reduction depending on the patient’s needs. Unlike significant weight gain which usually affects the entire body, the effects of pregnancy tend to be isolated to the midsection of the body.
Rapid weight gain due to pregnancy can alter abdominal muscles, causing a pooch that remains even after the baby weight is gone. A combination of liposuction and tummy tuck can help remove excess fat and skin to return a woman’s body to her pre-baby appearance.
