Cosmetic Surgery after Pregnancy
Motherhood is a beautiful experience, but it is tough work (quite an understatement, we know). First with the morning sickness, weight gain and labor pains, and then once the pregnancy part is over mothers barely have a chance to catch their breath because they’re busy taking care of a new life. With all of the new responsibilities motherhood brings, keeping up with one’s appearance often shifts to the bottom of the priority list. Whether its sagging breasts, tummy fat that just won’t budge, or wrinkles from all the stress- mothers deserve to look and feel their best, which is why we offer multiple plastic surgery procedures for mothers’ specific concerns.
Even with the best diet and exercise efforts, it can be seemingly impossible to regain a pre-baby body after childbirth. Each cosmetic procedure is designed based on a patient’s specific needs, so each procedure is different; however, mothers tend to desire some form of tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), liposuction, and/ or breast procedure.
Mothers often complain that they cannot get rid of their tummy pooch (as well as other areas of localized, excess fat) no matter how many sit ups they do. It’s important to understand that a baby can tear abdominal muscles with rapid growth, so no matter what kind of abdominal workouts the patient tries the abdominal muscles do not respond. During a tummy tuck procedure, underlying muscles are re-tacked and the overlying skin is tightened to produce a flatter abdomen. If excess fat is contributing to the tummy pooch, our skilled plastic surgeons utilize liposuction to remove it. Liposuction may also be performed in other areas of the body with stubborn fat (i.e.- double chin, hips, thighs, or back) based on the patient’s needs.
In addition to fat reduction and muscle revision, mothers can often benefit from a breast procedure. Depending on a patient’s needs, a breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, or a combination of breast procedures may be warranted. Breast augmentation (breast enhancement) increases the size and shape of the breasts with the insertion of a breast implant for patients who wish to change the aesthetic appearance of their chest. Some of our patients have the opposite problem: breasts that are too big. For these patients, we remove excess fat and glandular tissue from the breasts to reduce their size (breast reduction surgery). A breast lift procedure may be performed on its own, by trimming and tightening excess skin and breast tissue, or in conjunction with breast augmentation or breast reduction.
Although this blog targets newer mothers or those whose post-baby appearance still troubles them thus far, mothers with grown kids will be the first to tell you that older children can affect your appearance too. These mothers deserve a rejuvenated appearance as well, and may benefit from a facelift, a partial facelift, or blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). Although, patients with only minimal signs of aging may benefit first from a chemical peel, dermabrasion, or laser resurfacing.
