Types of Liposuction Explained
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, liposuction (lipectomy) was the second most requested cosmetic surgery procedure after breast augmentation in 2010. The annual report stated that 289,016 liposuction procedures were performed during the last year. With so many patients interested in body sculpting procedures we thought it would be advantageous to compile a list of fat reduction procedure types offered at Atlanta Plastic Surgery.
Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL)- A type of tumescent liposuction, PAL utilizes a vibrating component on the end of the liposuction cannula and injected tumescent fluid to relax the targeted fat and facilitate the fat removal process.
Ultra Sound Assisted Liposuction (UAL)- Sound waves loosen fat for removal. Unlike laser assisted liposuction, UAL uses externally applied energy and is therefore especially useful in small treatment areas requiring extreme precision.
Water Assisted Liposuction– One of the newest liposuction methods, water assisted lipo (also known as the Body Jet liposuction system) uses a stream of sterile water and tumescent fluid is used to loosen the undesired fat. The advantage of this system is its unique “closed” design that collects the removed fat and excess fluid for separation and later use in fat transfer procedures like breast augmentation or facial rejuvenation.
Liposuction is an adaptable Atlanta cosmetic procedure useful in maximizing the results of post-pregnancy plastic surgery, breast reduction surgery, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), and even buttock augmentation. It’s important to remember however, that liposuction is not a means of weight control. Liposuction is to be used by those patients who maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, but have isolated problem areas of excess fat and tissue that won’t respond to dieting or exercise.
