Liposuction Remains a Popular Cosmetic Procedure for Both Men and Women
Every year, liposuction (lipectomy) ranks among the most performed cosmetic procedures in the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)’s annual statistics. According to the 2012 ASAPS statistics, liposuction was the only body contouring procedure listed on the top five cosmetic procedures for both genders, ranking number one for men and second for women. The highly skilled plastic surgeons of Atlanta Plastic Surgery offer various types of liposuction to treat problem areas for both men and women. While the same liposuction techniques are performed for both female and male patients, each individual patient has different goals and needs to treat his or her specific problem area(s) of unwanted fat.
Liposuction is performed using the insertion of a cannula (tiny tube) to suction out subcutaneous fat located between the muscle and skin. The procedure begins with a small incision, typically less than half an inch, to insert the cannula. Depending on the technique, fluid or energy is applied to loosen excess fat for easier removal. Tumescent and body jet liposuction utilize sterile fluid to loosen the fat while power-assisted liposuction uses a vibrating component on the cannula to facilitate the fat removal process. Ultrasound assisted liposuction uses ultrasonic sound wave energy to externally loosen fat.
The techniques available at Atlanta Plastic Surgery can be performed for both female and male liposuction. Most patients struggle with common areas of stubborn fat such as the abdomen, lower back, and thighs, but men and women each have different problem areas. For example, women often struggle with stubborn fat on the thighs and flanks while men seek liposuction for male breast reduction and areas such as the flanks and lower abdomen. Though they many continue to remain popular, it’s important to remember these procedures are not substitutes for a healthy diet or regular exercise. Patients must be in good physical and mental health and maintain a healthy lifestyle after surgery.
Before undergoing any procedure, it is imperative to meet with your surgeon for a consultation to discuss goals and determine an appropriate treatment plan.
