Additional Facial Cosmetic Procedures to Further Prevent the Signs of Aging
Facelift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy, is a beneficial cosmetic procedure to address wrinkles, folds, and lax skin. Many patients, especially older patients, benefit from this procedure as it addresses all areas of the face. While facelift surgery safely and effectively reduces the signs of aging, it does not completely stop the aging process. As we age, new wrinkles and folds may develop and skin will continue to lose its elasticity. Although one facelift provides immediate rejuvenation, many patients are pursuing additional facial procedures according to studies published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) in the March issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
In the study, ASPS members concluded that secondary facelift procedures were safe and effective for continued facial rejuvenation. In the 20-year study, patients’ facelift results remained for an average of nine years. With the increase of patients pursuing cosmetic surgery at an earlier age, it is not uncommon for patients to consider additional facial rejuvenation procedures. The highly skilled plastic surgeons of Atlanta Plastic Surgery perform facelifts and other feature-specific procedures such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and rhinoplasty (nose surgery) to help patients achieve a younger, more rested appearance.
During facelift surgery, excess skin and fat are removed and remaining facial skin and muscles are tightened. At this time, facial tissue and fat may be repositioned to fill areas of lost volume. ASPS studies show low complication rates and results of a secondary facelift lasting approximately the same length of time as the first facelift procedure. While patients can pursue additional facelift procedures to further reduce the signs of aging, many patients can choose cosmetic procedures specific to one area or feature of the face.
Specifically, many patients elect blepharoplasty to rejuvenate the eyes, as they are typically the first place to show the signs of aging. Eyelid surgery removes hanging excess skin from the upper eyelids and heavy under-eye bags that contribute to a tired look. Rhinoplasty can also help patients achieve a younger appearance as the nose provides an aesthetic balance to the face. For patients who are concerned with sagging skin or wrinkles in certain areas, our surgeons also offer mini facelift options that address the upper, mid, or lower thirds of the face.
Non-surgical facial rejuvenation is also available at Atlanta Plastic Surgery and AYA Medical Spa, a medical spa owned and operated by our plastic surgeons. Cosmetic injectables and dermal fillers are minimally invasive anti-aging procedures to help reduce wrinkles and fine lines. New technologies such as our Sciton® laser system and Ultherapy® non-surgical skin tightening are also available for other skin conditions.
