ASPS Studies Show Combination Body Contouring Surgery is Safe and Effective
Liposuction and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) are the most common body contouring procedures and rank among the top five most performed surgical procedures by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). In a recent study published in ASPS’ medical journal, a combined procedure of liposuction followed by tummy tuck showed a low complication rate and high patient satisfaction. At Atlanta Plastic Surgery, our highly skilled plastic surgeons can perform these body contouring procedures individually to target specific areas of concern or in combination for overall rejuvenation.
Many patients pursue these treatments, but it is important to note that liposuction and tummy tuck each target specific areas and provide different results. Liposuction removes unwanted fat from areas such as the thighs, abdomen, arms, neck, and back. Fat is removed through a cannula, or tiny tube, inserted through very small incisions. Liposuction addresses small, stubborn areas of subcutaneous fat which lies directly beneath the skin and above the muscle. For this reason, liposuction does not address excess skin and should never be used as a weight loss solution.
While liposuction can be used on the abdomen, flanks, or back, tummy tuck surgery is designed to remove excess skin and fat and repair weakened abdominal muscles for a smoother midsection. During abdominoplasty, your surgeon will remove unwanted fat and excess skin through an incision made between the hips where scarring is easily covered by underwear or bathing suits. Abdominal muscles are then repaired and tightened for a flatter appearance. In some cases, patients can opt for a mini tummy tuck where the muscles are not repaired and a smaller incision is used.
In ASPS’ study, liposuction was performed first, followed by a tummy tuck. Reports show that combination liposuction and tummy tuck can reduce complication risk without the need of additional medication or extended downtime. In mommy makeover surgery, patients commonly combine liposuction and tummy tuck as pregnancies commonly affect the midsection.
