The Year of Body Reshaping
At the end of March, plastic surgery statistics for the year 2013 were released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and once again breast augmentation topped the list as the most commonly performed procedure in the United States. Also included among the top five are: nose surgery (rhinoplasty), eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), liposuction, and facelifts.
While that might not be particularly surprising, notably interesting trends did emerge. As little as a decade ago, the vast majority of patients receiving breast augmentation procedures were in the 20-29 year old age group. In the 2013 statistics, however, that same age group only accounted for 29% of the total number of breast augmentation procedures, ironically the same percentage of breast augmentation patients in the 40-54 year old demographic.
Moreover, certain procedures have shown a significant growth in popularity, despite not breaking into the top five. Since 2000 the number of breast lift procedures has increased by 70 percent, gaining on breast implants at a rate of almost two-to-one. As breast lifts are frequently requested by women who wish to give their breasts a more lifted look after the effects of weight gain, pregnancy or breastfeeding, many attribute the growing popularity to the mommy makeover phenomenon.
Mommy makeover is comprised of a combination of cosmetic procedures that restores pre-baby bodies to mothers that have experienced natural body changes post-maternity. Body reshaping procedures, including tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or liposuction, can sculpt the body’s contours and are commonly paired with breast procedures during mommy makeover. To address the changes that occur in the breasts due to pregnancy and breastfeeding, breast lift, breast reduction or breast augmentation can help mothers restore their breasts to a more youthful position. Since each mother’s body undergoes unique changes, each surgical plan is specifically tailored to address any number of problem areas the body has experienced. No matter what combination of procedures is performed, mommy makeover has the same goal: helping women reclaim the look they desire.
