Body Contouring for More Shapely Arms and Thighs
When most people imagine cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, they picture breast augmentations, tummy tucks, and facelifts – all techniques designed to address the face and torso. This is hardly surprising, since these areas are most commonly the center of attention during any sort of social interaction. However, in recent years there has been a significant increase in the popularity of procedures that make more subtle changes to areas of the body that might otherwise be overlooked, specifically the upper arms and thighs. According to statistics published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in their annual survey of plastic surgery procedures, attention seems to be shifting from the face to the arms and legs. While many facial procedures, including facelifts, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), and forehead lifts, have shown a modest decline in popularity since 2013, both upper arm and thigh lifts have shown significant increases.
The rise in the popularity of thigh lifts, which are up 72% since 2000, has largely coincided with the increasing emphasis on healthier lifestyles and weight loss. When diet and exercise are particularly effective, they may melt away excess inches while leaving behind folds of stretched and sagging skin where lost elasticity has made the skin unable to conform to the thigh’s new contours. A thigh lift, or thighplasty procedure, tightens the underlying tissue while reducing the excess skin to improve the contours and overall appearance of the leg. The procedure can be specifically tailored to address the outer or inner areas of the thigh in order to provide customized results to fit individual patient’s needs.
Even more startling, however, is the skyrocketing number of arm lift procedures performed in the United States, which has increased nearly fifty times over since 2000. An arm lift, or brachioplasty, can help tighten and smooth the underlying supportive tissue that defines the shape of the upper arm by removing localized pockets of excess fat and skin. This gives the arm a smoother, more toned look and can remove hanging skin commonly referred to as “bat wings.” Images of empowered feminine role models in particular have contributed significantly to the increasing popularity of this procedure.
