What is Breast Revision Surgery?
By far the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedure in America is breast augmentation, and in the nearly fifty years that Atlanta Plastic Surgery, P.C. has been a center for plastic surgery in the southeast, our board-certified plastic surgeons have performed thousands of such procedures on women from all around the world. However, despite the fact that breast augmentation procedures typically enjoy an extremely high satisfaction rate of more than 98%, not every procedure goes exactly as planned. As with any surgical procedure, complications can sometimes occur, and even if a woman is completely satisfied with her outcome, changes in her body or her aesthetic preferences can modify the way she feels about her breast implants long after the surgery is complete.
Breast revision surgery can address a variety of different issues that may arise months, years, or even decades after the initial procedure. In some extremely rare cases accidental damage to the breast implant itself can result in a rupture or leak, making it necessary to replace one or both implants to restore a symmetrical appearance. More commonly, gradual changes that affect a woman’s body over time, resulting either from fluctuations in weight or the birth of one or more children, can make the implants appear unnatural or unflattering, making it necessary to revise their appearance. Finally, some women may simply reach a stage in their life when they desire a change and may seek to have their breast implants removed altogether or replaced with implants of a different size. Regardless of the reason for breast revision surgery and regardless of whether the initial breast augmentation procedure was performed at Atlanta Plastic Surgery or by another surgeon, our experienced surgeons work closely with every patient to help them achieve their personal aesthetic goals.
While most plastic surgery procedures attempt to achieve seamless, natural-looking results that make it difficult to determine whether the patient has had any work done at all, in breast revision surgery that goal is even more paramount. This is why plastic surgeons performing breast revision procedures often make use of the same incisions that were made during the initial surgery, so they can minimize scarring as much as possible. Moreover, because breast implant technology is constantly evolving, many women have access to advanced options that may have been unavailable during their initial procedure. For example, patients who have suffered a breast implant rupture often express interest in the new, form-stable “gummy bear implants” that are made of a cohesive silicone gel that maintains its shape even if the outer shell is damaged. We can provide you with additional information about which of these many options might be best for your specific aesthetic requirements and body type during an individual consultation.
The decision to undergo breast revision, just like the decision to undergo breast augmentation or any other plastic surgery procedure, is a personal one.
