Targeted Plastic Surgery Procedures for the Lower Face
Although many people do not realize it, plastic surgery procedures are actually constantly evolving. Just a few short decades ago a traditional full facelift was seen as the only way to address the various signs of facial aging, but today we have a whole array of different surgical and non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques that are designed to specifically target individual areas of concern. One area that has fallen under particular scrutiny is the lower face and jaw line. Between “selfies” posted on social media and on-line video conferencing (like FaceTime), people are frequently being photographed from low, close angles that draw an inordinate amount of attention to the lower portion of the face. Fortunately there are a number of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery procedures specifically designed to address the lower areas of the face and help keep that key area looking its best.
Facial Rejuvenation with Fillers and Fat Transfer
Fat deposits underneath the skin are what give a youthful face its characteristic roundness and fullness. However, as we grow older, those fat deposits slowly break down, leaving the skin to sag and wrinkle and giving the face a gaunt and hollow appearance. In the early stages, facial volume can be temporarily restored with injectable facial fillers, like Juvéderm® or Restylane®. However, patients who are further along in the aging process, or patients who have thin or oblong faces that naturally have less facial fat, may benefit more from fat transfer techniques, which use small amounts of fat taken from the patient’s own body via liposuction to add volume to areas in need of augmentation.
Facial Contouring of the Chin and Jaw
Sometimes patients come to us to correct what they perceive as deficits in their natural appearance, and these areas of concern are often best addressed through facial contouring procedures. Even the most subtle changes to the underlying architecture of the face can potentially have a dramatic effect on the patient’s overall appearance. For example, genioplasty, or surgery of the chin, is a highly effective facial contouring procedure that can either reduce or augment the size and projection of the chin. Although generally used to correct facial defects and injuries, emphasize or deemphasize the size of the nose, or even give the face a more masculine or feminine appearance, genioplasty can also potentially give the neck and jaw line a smoother and more youthful appearance. Additionally, other forms of facial reconstruction, like surgery of the jaw to correct a misaligned bite, can be accomplished though advanced maxillofacial surgery.
