Men of All Ages Are Taking Advantage of Plastic Surgery
Back when it was originally founded nearly fifty years ago, most of the patients that we saw at Atlanta Plastic Surgery, P.C. were women. However, times have changed and men’s attitudes about plastic surgery have evolved a great deal. According to statistics compiled every year by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures undergone by men has increased by over 325 percent since 1997, and men now account for approximately 10% of all surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed in the United States alone. Moreover, the increased popularity of plastic surgery procedures among men is not limited to a single age group. Both older dads and younger millennials are seeking out plastic surgery in greater numbers than ever before.
Middle-Age Men: Maintaining a Young and Athletic Look
Both men and women are generally living longer, healthier lives than they were even thirty years ago, but with that longer lifespan can come increased pressure to look as young as you feel. Many successful and established men seek out plastic surgery to give them a rejuvenated appearance that will help them compete in a corporate environment dominated by younger peers. Injectable cosmetic treatments like Botox® or Dysport®, facial fillers like Juvéderm® or Restylane®, and other advanced anti-aging procedures like chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing help can smooth away wrinkles and make the entire face look younger with only minimal discomfort or recovery time. It is also not uncommon for men in their forties or fifties to undergo body contouring to alleviate sagging skin after significant weight loss, with abdominoplasty, or tummy tucks, and male breast reduction for gynecomastia being among the most popular.
Millennials: New Technology and New Perspectives
The rise of social media has made people much more aware of how they look from different angles, and this enhanced awareness has driven an increased interest in facial plastic surgery. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest among younger male patients in procedures that that can improve the appearance of specific facial features. Rhinoplasty to change the size or shape of the nose, genioplasty to augment or reduce the chin, and otoplasty to address ears that protrude too far from the sides of the face have all become extremely popular procedures with men under thirty. Additionally, many patients have found that injectable cosmetic treatments can effectively “press pause” on the effects of facial aging, minimizing the formation of new wrinkles and delaying the point when more significant anti-aging procedures become necessary. Undergoing these treatments in one’s twenties or thirties has the potential to provide dramatic benefits years down the line.
Regardless of their age, one of the main concerns that our male patients have about plastic surgery is avoiding an overdone or obviously worked-on look. Many of the facial traits associated with youth, like fuller cheeks, wider eyes, or smoother skin, are also traditionally seen as feminine, so special care is often required to ensure that the face maintains a masculine appearance. Any one of our board-certified plastic surgeons will work closely with you to address only your specific areas of concern while leaving the fundamental facial architecture unchanged.
