Ask the Experts: Brazilian Butt Lift
When plastic surgeons describe a cosmetic procedure as “versatile”, this can mean a few different things. Versatility can describe multiple applications as well as the ability of a certain surgery to treat different areas of the body. In the case of fat transfer injections, both descriptions apply. Using fat transfer to augment the buttocks, a procedure commonly known as the Brazilian butt lift, has become incredibly popular over the last few years. To help explain why this is the case, our board-certified plastic surgeons have taken the time to answer a few commonly asked questions about the procedure.
Question #1: What are the primary benefits of Brazilian butt lift surgery?
Brazilian butt lift surgery is designed to help reshape not only the buttocks, but also the surrounding areas including the hips, lower back, and thighs. The procedure can also help by enhancing the curvature of the lower body, reducing fat from elsewhere in the body, and improving the overall proportions of a patient’s silhouette.
Question #2: How does the Brazilian butt lift differ from surgery using buttock implants?
Unlike traditional buttock augmentation using implants, the Brazilian butt lift only uses the patient’s own natural fat to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks. The results of the Brazilian butt lift are often more natural-looking than those achieved by utilizing implants. However, some patients that do not have enough fat to use for injections may require traditional buttock augmentation to achieve the results they desire.
Question #3: What can I expect from recovery following a Brazilian butt lift?
Although every patient’s recovery may be different, generally speaking, most patients are able to return to work after about two to three weeks. We advise our patients to avoid directly sitting on their buttocks (in an upright position) during this period, but lying down or sitting in a reclined position may be ok. We instruct patients to wear compression garments to help limit post-surgical swelling and promote a fast and smooth recovery period.
