How can a Rhinoplasty surgical procedure improve the shape of your nose?
What is a Rhinoplasty?
Commonly referred to as a nose job, a rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed to change the size and shape of the nose. It is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in American. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there were 352,555 rhinoplasty operations performed in 2020.
Rhinoplasty can be performed for both functional and cosmetic reasons. A functional rhinoplasty can alleviate blocked and obstructed breathing issues where the nasal valves are blocked. A cosmetic rhinoplasty however can correct what one views as flaws in the shape of the nose. Among the most common changes, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons here at Atlanta Plastic Surgery can do is:
· Reduce the size of a nose that protrudes or has a hump
· Improve the appearance of a drooping nasal tip
· Elevate the bridge of the nose to make it less flat
· Correct a deviated septum
· Nose size in relation to a facial balance
· Nostrils that are large, wide, or upturned
How do I know if I am a good candidate for this Rhinoplasty?
Your nasal anatomy must be fully developed before undergoing this procedure. You should be in good health and a non-smoker. Lastly, you should also have a positive outlook and have realistic expectations about what this procedure can accomplish for your appearance.
What should I do before the procedure?
It is important to make your plastic surgeon aware of all medications and supplements you are currently taking, as there are some you may want to temporarily discontinue prior to your procedure. Among those that especially should be discontinued are those that contribute to bleeding such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Speak with your surgeon first, but a common list of supplements to consider avoiding before your procedure include:
· Fish Oils (Omega-3 Fatty Acids)
· Gingko Biloba
· Ginseng
· Valerian Root
· St. John’s Wort
· Kava
Your surgeon will give you instructions on when to stop eating and drinking the day before your surgery to prepare for the anesthesia. Be sure to follow these instructions carefully.
What do I do after the procedure?
Every person is unique in terms of their healing process and the type of rhinoplasty that was performed. However, here are a few general recommendations to follow. Avoid any medications that will cause bleeding such as aspirin and ibuprofen and some of the supplements mentioned above. In about a week your surgeon will remove any dressing if applicable. Your nose will be swollen but the nose will slowly begin to take its new shape. It is important to avoid salt and keep your head elevated. Bottom line, it is critical to follow closely all of your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions. Your surgeon will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.
What to expect long term
The initial swelling typically subsides in a few weeks, but it could take as long as a year for your nose contour to fully refine. There may be some gradual changes as you age, but most of the improvement should be long-lasting.
