How Can We Help with Male Breast Reduction?
How Can We Help with Male Breast Reduction?
Male breast reduction or gynecomastia is an overdevelopment or enlargement of the breast tissue in men (sometimes referred to as “man boobs”) that can occur at any age. This condition can be caused by hormonal changes, heredity, the use of certain drugs or excess weight.
Gynecomastia is characterized by:
· Excess localized fat
· Excess glandular tissue development
· Excess breast skin
Your board-certified plastic surgeon at Atlanta Plastic Surgery will help you decide if you are a good candidate for male breast reduction. However, there are some general guidelines for patients who wish to consider this procedure.
Generally, candidates for male gynecomastia surgery should be:
· In overall good health
· Non-smokers
· Men whose condition cannot be corrected through alternative medical treatments, diet, or exercise.
· Men whose breast development has stabilized
What can I expect if I decide to have Male Breast Reduction?
During your consultation with your board-certified plastic surgeon at Atlanta Plastic Surgery, your doctor will discuss with you the following:
· Your goals
· Health history and previous surgeries
· Your current medications, including over the counter medications and supplements
· Tobacco and recreational drug use
· Options and course of treatment
What are the advantages of this procedure?
How do I prepare for the procedure?
Before you undergo this procedure, your board-certified plastic surgeon will ask you to do the following:
· Get a full medical evaluation and laboratory workup
· Stop smoking
· Stop taking aspirin and other blood thinning medications
· Adjust other medications as needed
What can I expect after my procedure?
Typically you can expect a fairly speedy recovery following the procedure, though your board-certified plastic surgeon may recommend you hold off on exercising, especially chest exercises for a few weeks. Your surgeon may also prescribe pain medication and have you wear a compression garment to help the tissue conform to the new contour and reduce swelling while it heals.
Your surgeon will also advise you when to return for a follow-up appointment to check on your healing progress.
