Am I a good candidate for a Male Tummy Tuck
More and more men today are having cosmetic surgery, including the male tummy tuck. Tummy tuck surgery, known as abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin and strengthens weakened muscles in order to restore a firmer abdominal region. Even though many men try to get firmer abs through exercise and weight loss, sometimes these methods fail to work.
Our board-certified plastic surgeons here at Atlanta Plastic Surgery offer male tummy surgery along with other male cosmetic surgery procedures. The procedure can sometimes be combined with liposuction, but your surgeon can determine if you are a good candidate for both and explain the best way to proceed.
Some of the most common causes of a sagging abdominal region are:
- Age
- heredity
- prior surgery
- Significant fluctuations in weight
To be a good candidate for a tummy tuck, you should be in general good health, a non-smoker, have loose skin and a muscle pooch in your midsection, have realistic expectations about the results and are unhappy with the appearance of your abdominal area.
It is important to note, if it is truly fat in your abdominal region and or flank area (sometimes referred to as love handles), then you may be a better candidate for liposuction of the abdomen and the flanks. Some men may be able to have both procedures at the same time. The successful outcome of your procedure depends on being completely honest with your surgeon about your expectations, health, and lifestyle.
During the procedure, your surgeon will remove excess fat and skin from above and below the belly button, tighten the skin and underlying muscles Your surgeon will also use special techniques to ensure you keep your masculine physique.
You should expect to take at least two weeks off from work and allow at least six full weeks of recovery time before engaging in any strenuous activity including lifting and exercise. Be sure to follow all of your surgeon’s post-operative instructions. You will also need help with regular household activities during the first few days in order not to strain your incisions.
