Dispelling Myths About Breast Surgery
There are many questions about breast surgery both for women and yes even for men. Dispelling the truth from the myths is important as you consider whether to undergo any type of breast surgery. So let’s take a look at male breast surgery, breast augmentation, breast revision, and breast lift.
Only Women Can Get Breast Surgery
First, breast surgery is not just for women. Men who have gynecomastia commonly referred to as “man boobs”, often feel embarrassed and uncomfortable both in public and in locker rooms, gyms, and even in front of their spouses. Male breast reduction surgery may be performed on men with gynecomastia.
Breast Augmentation Will Improve Sagging Breasts
Another source of confusion is that breast augmentation will improve sagging and drooping breasts. This is false. Women choose breast augmentation if they are unhappy with the size of their breasts. Women who have loose skin and breasts that droop will typically need a breast lift in order to remove excess skin and lift sagging breasts to their original position and make them look perkier.
Women Cannot Breastfeed after Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction surgery does not eliminate a woman’s chance to be able to breastfeed following this surgery. Breast reduction involves the removal of fat and glandular tissue from the breast but if the areola and nipple area is kept intact, there is a high degree of future success in breastfeeding. However, a woman should discuss in detail the results she wants and the possible effects of this procedure with her board-certified plastic surgeon.
Male Breast Surgery is only performed on Overweight Men
Another misconception is that male breast surgery is only for overweight men. Gynecomastia is a condition caused by a number of factors, including heredity, abuse of recreational drugs, obesity, hormone imbalance, and more. Even muscular men and athletes in top condition can suffer from this condition. Luckily this condition is easily treated by surgery in where the surgeon removes the glandular tissue by cutting out and removing the glandular tissue. If a man has excess fat in or around the breast area, it may be removed with liposuction. In some cases, the surgeon may also lift and tighten the skin to restore a more masculine and trim appearance.
