Important Facts to Know Before Your Breast Augmentation Surgery
Breast augmentation surgery can help a woman who feels her breasts are too small to increase the size of her breasts. Breast augmentation can increase the size and shape of the breast using implants that are filled with silicone, saline fluid, or possibly fat transfer. Breast augmentation may also help restore breast volume following pregnancy or weight loss as long as the volume lost is not significant. Breast augmentation may also help correct asymmetrical breasts, where one breast is larger than the other. Let’s take a look at some of the facts about this surgical procedure.
What should I consider before having breast augmentation surgery?
There are a lot of important considerations prior to having breast augmentation. A few of them include the following. As with any surgical procedure, you should be in general good health and have a positive outlook and realistic expectations. Your breasts should be fully developed. It is also important to consider what your personal goals are for wanting breast augmentation so your surgeon can determine if this procedure is the right fit for you. Other factors include the placement of the implants above or below the chest muscle as well as choosing saline, silicone, and/or fat for your breast fill, feel, size and shape. If you choose to have silicone implants then an MRI is necessary for breast cancer screening baseline. Lastly, you should be aware that breast implants may not last a lifetime and you may eventually need another procedure.
What are the cost considerations for breast augmentation?
The surgeon’s fee is only one part of the cost for this procedure as there are other expenses besides the surgery itself. These expenses may include but are not limited to anesthesia fees, medication, surgical garments, facility costs, and medical tests. Your surgeon’s fee will also depend on his or her experience, the type of procedure, and the location of the office.
Keep in mind that insurance will not cover the cost of cosmetic surgery.

Generally, you should allow one to two weeks to recover from breast augmentation surgery. Your surgeon may prescribe medication to make you feel more comfortable following the procedure. You will also wear compressions such as a support bra or something similar to help with temporary swelling and discomfort. In the meantime, it is important to avoid any lifting, straining, or other strenuous activity for up to 4-6. Your surgeon will advise when you may return to work and more strenuous activity.
It is important to follow all instructions from your surgeon and keep all post-operative appointments.
