Ask the Atlanta Plastic Surgery Experts: Questions On Rhinoplasty Surgery
Rhinoplasty is unique among plastic and reconstructive surgery procedures due to the many ways it can be performed and the different ways it can help patients. It can be performed for purely cosmetic reasons or also as a reconstructive option for patients who have experienced a broken nose, breathing issues like a deviated septum, or congenital irregularities. Additionally, rhinoplasty surgery is one of the few cosmetic procedures that is roughly as popular among men as it is with women. To help patients gain a better understanding of rhinoplasty and what it is capable of, the expert plastic surgeons here at Atlanta Plastic Surgery thought it would be helpful to answer a few common questions about the procedure.
How old do you have to be to undergo rhinoplasty surgery?
Rhinoplasty is one of the few plastic surgery procedures that is commonly performed on adolescent patients. However, we still advise prospective patients and their parents in this age group to be patient when it comes to undergoing surgery. It’s important to allow the face to mature and for the nose to reach its full adult size before determining if the patient is a good candidate for rhinoplasty. Exceptions to this of course may be congenital irregularities. This is why the consultation process is so important to ensure the best approach.
What aesthetic concerns is rhinoplasty designed to address?
While many people may think of rhinoplasty as a way to change the size of their nose, the truth is that the procedure is far more versatile than that. In addition to altering the shape and size of the nose, rhinoplasty is able to satisfy a wide variety of aesthetic purposes including straightening the bridge of the nose, removing bumps, and altering nostril size.
Can the results of a previous rhinoplasty procedure be corrected with additional surgery?
Yes, this is known as revision rhinoplasty. Whether a patient is unsatisfied with the results of their previous procedure or they desire a change to the appearance that their original rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty can help by correcting the results of a previous rhinoplasty procedure. We typically recommend patients wait at least a year after undergoing their initial surgery to consider revision rhinoplasty in order to give the results of their original procedure the necessary time to reach their final state.
