Ask The Experts: Common Questions About Breast Implants
Things change quickly in the world of plastic surgery. However, in some cases, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Breast augmentation surgery has been one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the US for many years thanks to its tried and true ability to help women enhance their natural breast contour. Today, our expert plastic surgeons wanted to answer a few questions about breast implants in order to help inform any patients who are currently interested in undergoing a breast augmentation procedure.
Question #1: Will breast implants alone be able to “lift” my breasts?
This is a question that we get a lot. Certain breast implants, especially when placed in the upper pole of the breasts, can create a modest lifting effect. But implants alone cannot fully list breast tissue for women who experience breast sagging or wish to have significant breast lifting. This is why it’s so common to perform breast augmentation and breast lift surgery together.
Question #2: Will having breast implants removed reduce my natural breast tissue?
It shouldn’t. In the years following breast augmentation, a woman may choose to have her breast implants removed or replaced for reasons that are personal to her. In these cases, the natural breast tissue will not be diminished or reduced by having the implants removed. However, there is a chance that the breasts may not look exactly as they did before the augmentation procedure due to the potential for skin to lose its elasticity.
Question #3: Is it possible to have breast implants and fat transfer for the breasts performed together?
Yes, there is such a thing as hybrid breast augmentation that uses both breast implants and fat transfer injections together. Utilizing this approach our surgeons are able to provide the increased breast volume that patients want, while having more control to fine-tune the shape of the new breast contour to the satisfaction of the patient. This approach may also be able to help adjust any breast asymmetry for women who experience this issue.
Even for cosmetic procedures as common as breast augmentation, there is a lot for patients to know in advance. This is why we’re always happy to answer questions like these from our patients to help inform and ease any potential concerns about their surgery.
