How Do I Best Prepare for My Breast Lift Surgery?
You’ve decided to have a breast lift. In this blog we will discuss what steps to take to prepare for this cosmetic surgery. We’ll look at getting yourself, your home and your family ready for both before and after surgery.
What is a breast lift?
A breast lift raises the breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning breast tissue so the breast is in a more natural and lifted position. Women may consider this surgery after pregnancy, breast feeding or weight loss.
Tips on preparation before my surgery:
- Be sure you are ready by being in good physical and mental health
- Discuss your health history and medications (including supplements) with your surgeon and make necessary adjustments per his/her instructions
- Get pre-surgery lab tests per your surgeon’s instructions
- Stop using recreational drugs and tobacco before and after surgery-if applicable
- Get a baseline mammogram in order to compare your pre-surgery breasts with any changes in the breasts following your surgery in the future
- Stop taking aspirin and any anti-inflammatory drugs that can increase bleeding
- Limit your alcohol consumption to your surgeons recommendations
- Arrange for someone to drive you home following your surgery
- Prepare your home to keep needed items within reach at a low level
- Arrange to have someone to help with housework during your recovery
- Stay hydrated both before and after surgery
- Arrange for childcare if you have children under five years old
- Stock up on high protein, low-sodium foods and premade meals, fresh fruits and vegetables as well as caffeine-free drinks
After your surgery:
- Keep all post surgery appointments and follow all post surgery instructions
- Take all medications as prescribed by your surgeon
- Avoid straining and lifting as these activities could cause increased swelling and bleeding
- Avoid food and drinks with salt/sodium
- Sleep on your back at an inclined position (25 to 45 degree angle) for the first few days following surgery
- Avoid hot showers and saunas
- Avoid sexual activity for at least two weeks or longer depending on the advice of your surgeon
This is not an exhaustive list as you and your plastic surgeon will discuss all the preparations you need to do both before and after your surgery. Always attend your post surgical appointments and follow all instructions from your surgeon.
