Improving Confidence After Breast Cancer With Breast Reconstruction Surgery
As we have discussed many times, part of feeling your best is looking your best. For women who have recently undergone breast cancer surgery like a mastectomy or a lumpectomy, it can be difficult to feel confident and truly start fresh if you’re not happy with the appearance of your breasts following that procedure. In these cases, reconstructive surgeries like breast reconstruction surgery can provide an incredible boost to a woman’s self-esteem and body image.
It’s perfectly normal to have issues with self-esteem and body image after breast cancer surgery. Losing or altering a breast can make some women feel less feminine or serve as a constant reminder of a difficult and painful chapter in their lives. Breast reconstruction can help make these women feel better about themselves and help turn the page on breast cancer once and for all. Additionally, some women may struggle with a perceived lack of symmetry in their breasts following their breast cancer surgery. Undergoing breast reconstruction can help restore this balance to the figure.
Another thing that many women appreciate about breast reconstruction is that the procedure can be customized and performed in different ways depending on the preferences of each patient. Some reconstruction procedures use breast implants and tissue expanders to gradually recreate the natural shape and volume of the breast. Autologous breast reconstruction uses the patient’s own natural tissue (from elsewhere on the body) to form a new and very natural-looking breast. Additionally, some women may only require modest reconstruction using fat transfer injections to the breast, to fill in areas of lost volume after a less invasive procedure like a lumpectomy.
Here at Atlanta Plastic Surgery, we can perform autologous breast reconstruction in different ways depending on the specific case, as well as each patient’s personal preferences. This includes the scarless latissimus method (using the back muscle), the TRAM flap method (using tissue from the abdominal area), and the DIEP flap method (using abdominal skin and fat, but no muscle). We will discuss all of these options in-detail during the pre-surgery consultation appointment.
