What Can Be Done About My Uneven Breasts?
Uneven breasts are more common than you think but can make some women feel a bit self-conscious. There are many reasons for someone to have uneven breasts: genetics, hormonal changes, trauma, scoliosis or infection, to name a few causes. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of procedures that can help.
Some of the most common surgical procedures to correct uneven breasts, also known as breast asymmetry, include breast lift, fat transfer, breast augmentation or breast reduction and in some cases a combination of two of these procedures.
Please note that a woman should consult her doctor if there is a significant change in the size or shape of one breast.
Fat Transfer
During a fat transfer the surgeon will remove fat from one part of the body using liposuction, purify it, and then inject it into another part of the body for added volume. In the case of uneven breasts, a fat transfer will be performed on the smaller breast to more closely match the larger breast. Additionally, many surgeons feel fat transfer is a beneficial choice as the fat cells come from the patient’s own body thereby reducing the risk of an allergic reaction.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation uses a breast implant to improve and increase the size of a woman’s breast. Breast augmentation can create a fuller and even look to the breasts. In some cases, the surgeon will augment one side only. In other cases, the surgeon will choose different size implants to make both breasts more symmetrical.
Breast Reduction
On the other hand, during a breast reduction the surgeon will remove skin and tissue to reduce the volume of the breasts, then reshaping and elevating the breast to create a smaller bust. Breast reduction is chosen for uneven breasts when the patient wishes to be smaller. In this case, the surgeon will remove a smaller amount of tissue to help match the other breast.
Breast Lift
A breast lift, known as a mastopexy, raises the breasts by removing excess tissue and then tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and reform the breast. The nipple and areola will be repositioned to a higher height. It is not uncommon to have a breast lift in combination with one of the other procedures mentioned above, but a breast reduction is the most common combination procedure.
