3 Facts All Men Should Know About Gynecomastia
No one should ever feel ashamed or embarrassed by their body. The board-certified plastic surgeons here at Atlanta Plastic Surgery take considerable pride in helping our patients feel better about themselves and how they look. For our male patients, this is often done by addressing gynecomastia, a very common condition that causes male breast enlargement. Experts agree that the majority of men will experience some degree of breast enlargement at some point in their lives, which is why male breast reduction has become so in-demand over the years. Today, our board-certified plastic surgeons wanted to share a few simple facts for our readers about gynecomastia and how it can be treated .
Fact #1: Gynecomastia Isn’t Caused by Fat
Many men see enlargement in their chest area as a symptom of weight gain over time, but this does not necessarily indicate gynecomastia. In these cases, the issue can sometimes be alleviated with diet and exercise, or the assistance of chest liposuction surgery. However, since true gynecomastia is caused by excess glandular tissue, and not fat, only male breast reduction surgery will be able to help.
Fact #2: Gynecomastia is Most Often Caused by Hormonal Issues
While there are certain things that you can do to reduce your risk of developing gynecomastia (including not using recreational drugs or steroids), the truth is that most cases can’t be prevented. That is because gynecomastia is most commonly caused by hormonal imbalances. This is why the condition is so common in teenagers and adolescents who are in the midst of puberty. But age, weight gain, and certain medical conditions can lead to a decline in testosterone later in life, which can increase the risk of developing gynecomastia.
Fact #3: Male Breast Reduction Results Are Long-Lasting
We have spoken to men over the years who were hesitant to undergo male breast reduction over fears that their results wouldn’t last, or that they would experience additional enlargement issues down the road. Thankfully, when performed by our board-certified plastic surgeons, male breast reduction results are intended to last many years. Stopping the natural aging process and certain changes that come over time might not be possible, but the satisfaction rate from this procedure remains extremely high several years after surgery.
With these facts in mind, our hope is that more men will envision the path to a gynecomastia-free future ahead of them.
