How Can I Make Plastic Surgery Recovery Easier?
Time is a precious thing. During a plastic surgery consultation appointment in our office, patients constantly ask us about the post-surgery recovery period. More specifically, if there is anything they can do to make plastic surgery recovery as simple and fast as possible. Like the surgery itself, recovery after plastic surgery varies depending on the type of procedure performed and the specific details of each individual case. However, our board-certified plastic surgeons do have a few tips to share on how patients can ease their recovery period after undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure.
Have Your Home Prepared Before Your Procedure
Preparation is critical. It’s important and extremely helpful for your home (or wherever you’re recovering) to be ready with everything you need in advance of your surgery. This means making sure you have the food and drinks you’ll need in the days after your procedure, including drinks with electrolytes to help keep you hydrated. When possible, have your prescriptions filled and waiting, and also make sure to have any compression or post-op garments on-hand to reduce post-surgery swelling.
Be Up & Active
While the recovery period is a time for healing and rest, that doesn’t mean that it should be spent entirely in bed. While you’ll want to avoid any more strenuous physical activity that can increase your heart rate, raise your blood pressure, and impact your healing incision, light physical activity is incredibly helpful during this time. Taking short walks (as long as your surgeon says this is okay to do) during this time can help get your blood flowing in healthy ways and aid in your recovery.
Accept That Recovery Can’t Be Rushed
While there are things you can do to promote a healthy and successful recovery, it’s also very important to remain patient and accept the recovery period as part of the plastic surgery process. Patience and adherence to your surgeon’s post-surgery guidelines will pay massive dividends when it comes to healing as quickly as possible and achieving the best long-term results from your cosmetic procedure.
We always take time during the pre-surgery consultation to discuss what patients can expect during their recovery. Doing so helps our patients form and maintain realistic expectations and promotes the best-possible plastic surgery experience.
