Breast Implant types offered at Atlanta Plastic Surgery, P.C.

Atlanta Breast ImplantsBecause every woman has different reasons to undergo breast augmentation, each surgical procedure will be tailored to match the needs and expectations of the patient. At Atlanta Plastic Surgery, we offer both saline breast implants and silicone breast implants. Both types of breast implants consist of a silicone elastomer shell, although saline implants are filled with a sterilized salt water solution and silicone implants are filled with silicone gel. Both types of implants have their advantages, and both have been deemed safe for use by the FDA. Atlanta Plastic Surgery is the premier supplier of silicone gel breast implants in Atlanta, Georgia.

The look of the breast will not only be determined by the type of implant, but also by the size of the implant used. Unlike the average person who thinks of breast size in terms of bra size cups, implants are determined by the amount of volume they hold or how many cubic centimeters (cc) of solution are held in the implant shell. Implant size must be very particular to each patient because factors like body frame, size of chest wall, width of shoulders, height, weight, and breast size prior to surgery have an enormous influence on how a particular implant will look. The implant placement, as well as its shape, can also give the appearance of smaller or larger breasts, even if the implants contain the same amount of volume.

Thus it depends on the desired look of the patient and the patient’s body type to determine which type and size implant will be used for a breast enhancement. The plastic surgeons at Atlanta Plastic Surgery know that no one surgery is the same. They work with each individual patient to ensure the best treatment plan for them.

The Breast Enhancement Procedure at Atlanta Plastic Surgery, P.C.

Breast enhancement surgery requires the use of general anesthesia and generally takes from one to two hours to perform. During the procedure, a small incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola, or in the armpit. The plastic surgeon then lifts the muscle, breast tissue, and skin to create a pocket and inserts an implant. While the breast implants can be placed under or over the pectoral muscles, typically our surgeons place implants under the muscle because there is less risk of developing a scar capsule around the implant.

In some cases, complementary procedures may be recommended in addition to a breast enhancement. For example, when the breasts begin to sag from aging changes, weight loss or after pregnancy, a breast lift may be required in combination with an augmentation. Your plastic surgeon will work will you to determine the most effective surgical options.

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Augmentation

  • Yes, both silicone and saline breast implants have been used safely for decades. Even though there was some concern, in the early 1990’s, that silicone gel implants might cause various medical disorders, extensive testing on thousands of women has shown those fears to be unfounded.  A review of several large epidemiological studies of women both with and without implants, which was presented to the FDA in 2007, indicated that these specific health concerns were no more common in women with implants than in those women without them. Moreover, the newest form-stable implants, known as gummy bear implants, are composed of a more cohesive silicone material that maintains its shape even if the implant shell happens to rupture, minimizing the possibility of accidental leaks while achieving a firmer, more natural look and feel. Regardless of the type of implants received, it is important to understand that breast augmentation is still major surgery, and not to be taken lightly. It is necessary that you carefully follow all of your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions in order to recover quickly, avoid complications, and achieve the best possible results.
