Post Weight Loss Surgery at Atlanta Plastic Surgery, P.C.

Performed at our Atlanta, Alpharetta, Cumming and Newnan, GA locations.

Many patients who have undergone significant weight loss, whether it was through diet and exercise or through bariatric (weight loss) surgery, have loose, hanging skin left behind in various areas of the body. Post-bariatric cosmetic procedures can help improve the body’s appearance by eliminating this excess, sagging skin while lifting and smoothing the underlying support tissues, revealing a smoother and more contoured silhouette.

Because each patient’s body reacts differently to drastic weight loss, every post-bariatric procedure is different. However, the surgery usually involves a combination of one or more specifically targeted elements which can include:

  • a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) for the midsection
  • a body lift for the lower abdomen, back, and/or hips and flanks
  • an arm lift (or brachioplasty) for skin hanging from the upper arms
  • a thigh lift to address excess skin around the upper and/or inner thighs
  • a breast lift to restore sagging breasts to a higher, more youthful position

Post-bariatric surgery can also frequently be combined with liposuction procedures to remove isolated fat deposits that have been proven to be resistant to weight loss efforts. At Atlanta Plastic Surgery, P.C., our board certified plastic surgeons discuss concerns and expectations with our patients at a plastic surgery consultation prior to surgery so that every patient achieves optimal results.

Frequently Asked Questions about Post Weight Loss Surgery

Am I a suitable candidate for post-weight loss surgery?
The final results of post-weight loss surgery, whether performed on the arms, torso, breasts, or thighs, can be potentially spoiled by significant changes in weight or size that may occur in the future, so good candidates for post-weight loss surgery are adults whose weight loss has stabilized and who are committed to leading a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and fitness. Ideally, patients should have a positive outlook and realistic goals, and should not have any pre-existing medical conditions that might impair healing or increase their risk of infection. Since cigarette smoking may have a detrimental effect on the healing process and blood flow to the skin, it is recommended that those seeking post-weight loss surgery either be non-smokers or refrain from smoking in the months prior to and immediately after their procedure.

Is it necessary that I have had bariatric surgery before getting post weight loss body contouring?
Not at all! Post-weight loss plastic surgery is designed to help remove excess, sagging skin that may have been left behind after significant weight loss, but how that weight loss may have been achieved is irrelevant. The skin constantly shifts and stretches to accommodate the movement of the body, but as we grow older the skin can gradually lose its elasticity. This is often most noticeable when a body that had been overweight for many years loses excess weight rapidly, whether that be through traditional diet and exercise, through bariatric surgery, or even after significant weight gain during pregnancy. In any case, the skin that has been stretched out of shape can sometimes fail to snap back into its former position, leaving loose folds that hang and sag. Post-weight loss body contouring procedures carefully remove that excess skin while improving the shape of the underlying support tissue, restoring a smoother and aesthetically pleasing physique.

How long will I have to wait after post-weight loss surgery before I can resume normal activities and exercise?
The post-weight loss body contouring techniques are all significant surgical procedures requiring diligent post-surgical care and recovery. Even though all patients are different, and individual healing times can vary a great deal, in most cases it will be at least two weeks before you will be able to resume regular activity, and even longer before attempting strenuous exercise. Very light activity may be recommended in order to improve circulation and speed recovery, but it is likely that your surgeon will instruct you to avoid bending, straining, or lifting for several days or even weeks after your procedure, depending on what exactly has been done and your own individual healing requirements. As with all plastic surgery procedures, you should carefully follow all post-operative care instructions and diligently keep all scheduled follow-up appointments in order to minimize the possibility of complications and make sure that your recovery proceeds as smoothly as possible.
