Thigh Lift (Thighplasty) at Atlanta Plastic Surgery, P.C.
Performed at our Atlanta, Alpharetta and Cumming, GA locations.
Many people who have undergone drastic weight loss struggle with sagging skin on their thighs, leading to discomfort and an unbalanced appearance. Luckily, there is a solution: Thigh Lift (Thighplasty) Surgery. Unlike liposuction (body contouring), which isolates very specific regions of fat underneath the skin, thigh lift surgery affects the appearance of a larger area by removing layers of fatty tissue and excess skin on the inner and/or outer thigh.
Atlanta Plastic Surgery, P.C.’s plastic and reconstructive surgeons perform inner, bilateral, and medial thigh lifts to help reduce and tighten remaining tissues in the respective regions of the leg. For post weight-loss patients who may have multiple areas of excess skin, thighplasty can be performed in conjunction with abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), arm lift (brachioplasty), and body lift procedures.
Post bariatric surgery patients enjoy the freedom that accompanies shedding pounds of fat, but are often encumbered by the excess, hanging skin that is left behind. Because the skin’s elasticity is limited, many massive weight-loss patients seek thigh lift surgery (thighplasty) to rid them of the unsightly skin and complete the transformation they’ve worked so hard to accomplish.
Frequently Asked Questions about Thigh Lifts
Will there be visible scars left behind after a thigh lift?
Any procedure that requires cutting the skin will leave behind some form of scar, but during thigh lift surgery the curved horizontal incision that needs to be made can be placed in the crease of the groin, making it relatively easy to conceal in all but the most revealing of bathing suits. In some cases, if there is a large amount of excess skin, an additional vertical scar along the inner thigh may be necessary as well. Because there can be some downward migration of the scar due to the natural action of gravity, particular care must be taken during recovery to place as little stress on the area as possible. As always, it is pertinent that you follow all of your surgeon’s post-operative care instructions carefully.
Is it possible to have liposuction instead of a thigh lift?
Thigh lifts and liposuction may both be performed on the same area of the body, but they are each designed to accomplish very different goals. Liposuction removes isolated fat deposits from underneath the skin, but it can do nothing to smooth and tighten the excess, sagging skin that can be left behind after the fat is gone. In patients whose skin still retains a high degree of elasticity and can readily “shrink back” after the removal of fat, liposuction alone can achieve very satisfactory results. However, if some residual loose skin is left behind after liposuction, a thigh lift may also be necessary to achieve optimal results.
What are the risks associated with undergoing a thigh lift?
As with most cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, complications resulting from a thigh lift are rare, but they can occasionally occur and should be carefully considered. In addition to the general risks that are associated with any surgery, such as the possibility of poor reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, or infection, patients undergoing a thigh lift may experience delays in healing because the closure needs to be tightly but carefully sutured in order to get a good result. Patients may also need to take special precautions to avoid excessive scarring, since the demands typically placed on this specific area of the body may place greater stress on the healing incisions. As with all plastic surgery procedures, it is vital that you discuss pre- and post-surgical care and maintenance plans in detail with your experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. It is always recommended that all patients attend all scheduled post-operative office visits so that recovery can proceed without incident and patients can achieve the best possible results.
Who are the best candidates for thigh lift procedures?
Thigh lifts are ideal for patients who have lost a large amount of weight and are left with loose, sagging skin along the inner thighs. Patients who have developed similarly loose skin due to the aging process may also be excellent candidates. As with all surgical procedures, patients should ideally be in generally good physical health, have no medical conditions or habits (such as smoking) which might impair the healing process. Patients should also have a thorough understanding of what the procedure will entail as well as reasonable expectations about its outcome.
