Women who undergo a mastectomy and then have breast reconstruction surgery now have a new procedure that can restore sensation to their reconstructed breast. Unfortunately, not all women know that they lose the feeling in their breasts and nipples after a mastectomy. During a mastectomy, the nerves to the breast and nipple are cut, causing […]

When you hear the term “breast revision surgery,” your mind may immediately think “failed breast augmentation.” The truth is, breast revision surgery is performed for a variety of reasons, some of which have nothing to do with an unsatisfactory breast augmentation. Yes, there are cases where an initial breast augmentation has left a woman with […]
Breast cancer presents a number of unique, difficult challenges for anyone it affects. As a plastic surgeon who specializes in both reconstructive & cosmetic procedures, I’m honored to have the opportunity to help my patients navigate and ultimately heal from this situation. DIEP flap breast reconstruction is one of the most popular types of reconstructive surgery among women who have endured breast cancer. To help you & your loved ones understand if this option might be available to & right for you, I’m breaking down four advantages of the DIEP flap breast reconstruction:
You lose excess abdominal skin & fat:
Although it’s not the main purpose of a DIEP flap breast reconstruction procedure, the removal of extra skin & fat is a necessary effect of this surgery. This is because the abdomen acts as the donor site (area from which tissue is taken to reconstruct the breast) in DIEP breast reconstruction. For many women, this improves their abdominal contour in a manner similar to that of a tummy tuck.
Some people prefer autologous breast reconstruction methods like DIEP flap because they use the patient’s own tissue to reconstruct the breast. This results in an outcome that many patients believe looks & feels exceptionally natural. This is, in large part, a matter of personal preference, but you can sample different materials and learn more about the various aspects of breast-enhancement options during our consultation.
It’s (re)built to last:
DIEP flap and other autologous breast reconstruction methods can last for the rest of the patient’s life. Because it consists of tissue from the patient’s own body, the material used in fat-transfer breast reconstruction essentially becomes a new part of the patient thereafter.
It leaves options open:
In addition to preserving an important blood supply in the abdomen, the DIEP flap procedure preserves the patient’s abdominal muscles. This means that you don’t have to rule out having children in the future or fear complications from midsection weight gain.

Plastic surgery can benefit people of all ages in countless ways, and I’m particularly excited about the trends I’m seeing among younger adults. In 2017, 16% of the 1.8 million plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States were made on patients between the ages of 20 and 29, an increase of 2% from the previous year. This means that a growing number of millennials are recognizing the amazing potential of cosmetic plastic surgery. As a plastic surgeon with boundless enthusiasm for my work, I’m happy to see this level of interest from young people. Therefore, for today’s blog, I’m providing some stats and thoughts on the top five most popular plastic surgery procedures among Americans in their twenties:
- Breast augmentation
Whether it’s done with artificial implants or autologous fat transfer, breast augmentation is consistently the most popular plastic surgery procedure for all age groups in the United States. In 2017, 85,690 twenty-somethings chose to have their breasts surgically augmented, a 4% increase from 2016. In addition to being the most popular plastic surgery procedure overall, breast augmentation was also the most commonly performed procedure among Americans aged 30-39.
- Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty)
People choose to have nose surgery to achieve various aesthetic goals: reduce overall size, correct subtle imperfections, repair flaws resulting from injury or birth defects, and more. Also known as a “nose job,” rhinoplasty can even be an effective procedure for treating certain breathing problems. The ASPS reports that 68,624 people between ages 20 and 29 opted to have their noses surgically reshaped in 2017.
Many people have stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond to diet and/or exercise, and liposuction is sometimes the only way to address this common issue. 38,082 Americans in their twenties had liposuction in 2017, a 6% increase from 2016, so more younger adults seem to be learning about the difference this time-tested procedure can make.
- Breast lift
The breast lift is sometimes confused with breast augmentation (perhaps because the term “lift” evokes growth) or breast reduction (in part because a breast lift typically involves the removal of some breast tissue). However, a breast lift is its own specific type of breast enhancement, its primary purpose being a change in the breasts’ positioning rather than their size. 14,290 Americans between ages 20 and 29 had breast lift procedures in 2017, a 4% increase from 2016.
- Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
The tummy tuck is the fifth most popular plastic surgery procedure among Americans in their twenties, having been chosen by 12,395 people of this age group in 2017. Although it involves the surgical removal of some fat from the middle and lower abdomen, a tummy tuck’s main purpose is to tighten and smooth out one’s stomach area.

The Brazilian butt lift has become increasingly common in recent years. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) yearly statistics, gluteal augmentation (enhancing the size and shape of the butt) is one of the fastest growing types of procedures in plastic surgery. This is likely because there are few other single procedures that can so dramatically improve the patient’s shape and silhouette. Given how popular this procedure is, I get a lot of questions about it. Here are some of the questions about Brazilian butt lifts I hear most frequently:
Am I a good candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift?
As with any cosmetic plastic surgery procedure, you need to be in good health, have the necessary time & resources to adequately recover, and manage your goals and expectations in realistic, healthy ways. Specifically for a Brazilian butt lift, you need to have good skin quality on your butt and hips, as well as adequate fat stores elsewhere in your body to transfer to the surgical site. Contrary to what the name suggests, a Brazilian butt lift will not take care of sagging skin (a standard butt or gluteal lift serves that purpose). If you want something other than butt augmentation without implants, a different procedure or combination of procedures may be what you’re looking for. Visit my before-and-after gallery to see my Brazilian butt lift results (as well as those of many other procedures).
What special techniques do you use for a Brazilian Butt Lift?
I use the most advanced fat grafting technique for Brazilian butt lifts: expansion vibration lipofilling (EVL). Using EVL, I can powerfully shape the tissue while keeping the grafted fat in the subcutaneous space (under the skin). Thus, this specialized method combines both optimal safety and aesthetic technique. The EVL technique represents one of the latest fat grafting methods and is not offered by all plastic surgeons performing the Brazilian butt lift procedure. When choosing a surgeon, I advise asking if they plan for a subcutaneous-only grafting procedure and if they offer expansion vibration lipofilling as a method of fat placement. For the skilled surgeon, the shaping process of selectively removing fat (by liposuction) is just as important as the ability to properly place the fat into the buttocks.
Why is the Brazilian butt lift so popular?
When trying to get into better shape, many people find themselves with certain characteristics that diet and exercise simply cannot affect. Just as you cannot target specific body areas for weight loss, you cannot gain weight in a certain area to become curvier without it distributing elsewhere in your body. Furthermore, genetics largely determine the shape and size of one’s butt, making it difficult to affect these elements through behavior changes alone. This is where the Brazilian butt lift is extremely effective. If you want a more pronounced butt and/or more aesthetically appealing lower-body proportions (in the hips, lower back, thighs, etc.), want your clothing to be more flattering, and/or desire an overall more youthful look, the Brazilian butt lift may be an ideal option for you. The Brazilian butt lift can improve the appearance of the entire lower body in addition to the butt itself.
Is the Brazilian butt lift safe?
When performed by a specially trained plastic surgeon, in an accredited facility, and on a suitable patient, the Brazilian butt lift has a low rate of complications. Conversely, although any surgical procedure is unsafe if performed by an unqualified plastic surgeon, this is especially true of the Brazilian butt lift. No matter what surgery you choose, it’s always important to select your plastic surgeon wisely. However, when it comes to this procedure, I cannot emphasize the importance of seeking out a uniquely qualified plastic surgeon enough; the techniques, knowledgebase, and precision required to correctly execute this procedure are highly specific.
